RESTRICTIONS OF FOREIGN SHAREHOLDING IN TELECOM BUSINESSES TO BE RELAXED
In response to the future WTO accession of Taiwan and to the overseas public offering of shares by Chunghwa Telecom, the Director-ate-General of Telecommunications (DGT) is planning to relax controls on the restrictions of foreign shareholding in telecommunications businesses. The National Conference on Devel-oping Knowledge and Economy, sponsored by the Council for Economic Planning and Devel-opment, which closed on 5 November 2000, has passed a resolution to raise direct foreign shareholding ratio in telecom businesses to 40%. In regard to the restrictions of combined direct and indirect shareholding ratio, according to the DGT current plans, the upper limit is proposed to be relaxed to 100%.
