ROM CHIP MARKING SCHEME

Cathy C. W. Ting

To deter counterfeiting of electronic games console chips, the ROC first introduced a system of chip markings in July 1999. However, to make the system more comprehensive, and to demonstrate the commitment to protecting in-tellectual property rights, the Ministry of Eco-nomic Affairs has now reviewed the system and adjusted it by introducing an Implementation Plan for Read-Only Memory Chip Markings. Under the plan, identification markings are to be implanted into Mask-ROM memory products, in order to clearly identify the chip designer and manufacturer, and thus assist law enforcement agencies and IPR owners in combating counter-feiting. The plan is expected to be implemented in late June 2000, and will regulate the use of Mask-ROM chip markings and the application and registration process. The system will apply to both local and foreign companies which de-sign and/or manufacture Mask-ROM chips in Taiwan.
