PERMITTED EFFICACY CLAIMS FOR HEALTH FOODS
On 2 August 1999, the Department of Health (DOH) announced the five health food product claims that can be made: regulating blood lipids, ameliorating osteoporosis, regulating immune function, improving gastro- intestinal function and maintaining dental health. The DOH has established evaluation methods to determine the safeness and efficacy of these claims. It is also examining the efficacy of health food products in terms of regulation of blood sugar, antioxidant effects and protection of liver function (in re-spect of chemical injury to the liver), and is drafting testing, and evaluation methods for these effects.
