AMENDMENTS TO THE REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE APPROVAL OF PEOPLE OF THE MAINLAND AREA EMPLOYED BY MULTINATIONALS ENTERING TAIWAN FOR PURPOSES OF JOB RELOCATION
According to the Regulations Governing the Approval of People of the Mainland Area Employed by Multinationals Entering Taiwan for Purposes of Job Relocation (the "Regulations"), people of the Mainland Area who have been employed for at least one year by multinationals as officers, managers, or professional or technical employees, may apply for entry into Taiwan pursuant to job relocations. On April 2, the Department of the Interior amended the Regulations in part. This article will highlight the key changes.

The Regulations provide that the initial period of stay shall not exceed three years, and allow ap-plication for subsequent periods of stay. The amendment increased the length of the subsequent periods from one year to three years.

The original Regulations require a qualifying Taiwan citizen to serve as guarantor. Under the amended regulations, an officer or manager at the multinational's Taiwan branch or subsidiary will serve as guarantor. Moreover, if the Taiwan branch or subsidiary indicates that it is willing to take on the guarantor's responsibilities, as provided in the Regulations, it may also serve as guarantor.

The amendment also eliminated the provision requiring people of the Mainland who enter Taiwan pursuant to the Regulations to register with the police department at his or her place of residence within 15 days of entry.
