According to statistics published by mainland China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), in 2004 the SIPO accepted a total of 353,807 new patent applications for processing, an increase of 14% over 2003 (308,487 applications). A de-tailed breakdown of new applications in 2004 is as follows:
