According to figures published by the Intellec-tual Property Office (IPO), in 2004 the IPO ac-cepted 72,105 new patent applications for proc-essing, an increase of 9.6% over 2003 (65,742 applications). The detailed breakdown of new applications in 2004 is as follows:
