TAIWAN ON SPECIAL 301 WATCH LIST
In 2001, the United States placed Taiwan on its Special 301 Priority Watch List. Following the enactment of new amendments to the Copyright Act in September 2003, the completion of leg-islation formalizing the legal status of the po-lice's 220-strong intellectual property rights protection squad, which is charged with com-bating counterfeiting, and the current active ef-forts of the Judicial Yuan to set up specialist IPR courts, the United States Trade Representative conducted an out-of-cycle review of Taiwan's performance in IPR protection. In January 2005 Taiwan was moved from the Special 301 Priority Watch List to the less severe Special 301 Watch List.
With regard to issues of continuing concern for the US, such as the progress of the proposed Proprietary Rights in Pharmaceutical Product Data Act, and the prevention of Internet-based IPR infringements, the relevant agencies are currently drafting related legislation in the hope of bringing about improvements.
