HSU, JOHNSON

Approximately 10 million licensed motorcycles are currently on the street in Taiwan, outnumbering automobiles three- to four-fold. In view of the staggering losses of life and property caused by traffic accidents each year, the Ministry of Finance instituted compulsory motorcycle liability insurance beginning 1 January 1999.

The scope of coverage of the compulsory liability insurance for motorcycle owners is as follows:

  • maximum NT$200,000 per person for bodily injury;

  • maximum NT$1.2 million per person for disability;

  • maximum NT$1.2 million per person for death;

  • maximum NT$1.4 million per person for disability and death;

  • when one accident results in injury or death to two or more persons, each person is eligible for benefits according to the above standards.
