The Intellectual Property Office recently an-nounced patent statistics for 2003 as follows:

New patent applications: 65,512 (up by 6.69% over 2002).

Invention patent applications laid open: 8,194.

Re-examination applications: 13,325 (up by 13.62% over 2002).

Granted patents published: 53,033 (up by 17.74% over 2002).

Patent opposition petitions: 1,867 (up by 7.76% over 2002).

Patent cancellation petitions: 512 (down by 13.37% over 2002).
