NO COPYRIGHT IN ENGLISH NAMES OF GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

Cathy C. W. Ting

In a recent interpretation, the Intellectual Prop-erty Office stated that English names of gov-ernment agencies and personnel included in the web sites of government agencies are merely English translations of the Chinese terms, and should be regarded as "slogans and common symbols, terms, formulas, numerical charts, forms, notebooks, or almanacs" as referred to in Article 9 Subparagraph 3 of the Copyright Act. As such they cannot be the subject of copyright, and can be used without fear of infringement.
