ANTI-SMUGGLING STATUTE TO BE AMENDED
In view of numerous recent cases of IPR in-fringement involving exports from Taiwan, the government has decided to strengthen border control to detect the traffic of counterfeits. In-creased penalties will also be introduced for all cases in which goods destined for import or ex-port that are declared as freight, sent by mail, or carried as luggage are found to infringe on in-tellectual property rights. The Executive Yuan recently approved a draft amendment to the Customs Anti-Smuggling Statute that authorizes a fine of one to three times the value of goods under such circumstances and the confiscation of the goods.
